On Children )

Tuesday mostly involved chores for me and half of them did not get done despite my best intentions. I have a bunch of chaos to deal with but on the scale of problems people I know are facing -- a couple in Florida STILL without power and several facing upheaval from the earthquake in Mexico and hurricane approaching Puerto Rico -- not worth detailing. In happy news, I got an invitation to the EX Raid on Thursday evening, but in unhappy news, it's right when Rosh Hashanah dinner should be ending so really lousy timing for American Jews.

We watched most of the Orioles game against the Red Sox, which was just as horrendous as it was the night before when the Orioles went into extra innings and proceeded to blow the game in humiliating style. That took up so much of the evening that we gave up on maybe starting any of the HBO shows that won Emmys and waited for Hillary Clinton on The Late Show (where Colbert annoyingly did not acknowledge why people were so upset about the Spicer stunt). “Okay,” Heron patted the air lightly. “That's not what I was insinuating.”

“Insi-- what?” Shiv threw his hands up, and the momentum pulled him to his feet, balancing lightly on his toes before beginning to pace between the front door and the short wall that held both his bedroom door and the bathroom door. The young man paced, loping strides pulling him nearly nose to nose with the wall before he reversed direction to lunge toward the opposite wall.

“In-sin-u-ate,” Heron repeated blandly, though he was careful to pronounce each syllable. “it's hinting, but subtly, or jockeying for position or a favor. Like...” Long fingers curled as Heron snapped his middle finger away from his thumb. “Muuuum,” he mock-whined, “my legs hurt, and the back seat is squashed up against yours and Da's.” Another minuscule shrug followed as the faintly petulant expression faded away. “In that case, insinuating that sitting in the front passenger seat would be more comfortable.”

Distances )

My Monday mostly involved chores, since Maddy is even now flying to the east coast and I thought I was going to have another few weeks to clean up some stuff in Daniel's room for her, but I did get a bunch of work done. And I did get out to Pokemon Go raids at both a Sprint store and a Starbucks because no one is sure which one is going to get the next EX Raid (the big Raikou ran away, but I think it's the win that counts for raid passes, not the catch).

We started watching the Orioles game and the Orioles were winning handily, but then terrible things started to happen (by now it's in extra innings and it's even worse) so instead we caught up on The Orville from Sunday night, which I must confess I really loved -- okay, there's still more bathroom humor than necessary but the scenes between Kitan and Finn are awesome and I appreciate Grayson's eye-rolling. Some pictures from Flag Ponds Park yesterday:

A few minutes later, Heron placed the three jars of honey on Shiv's kitchen counter. “So, there's French lavender flavor, red ginger flavor, and cinnamon flavor, and if you like one better than the other two, or hate them all, just let me know,” he offered, absently tucking his hair behind his ear. “I make five or six varieties at a time now, trying to get ahead of the next few months with my roommates, so making another batch is no problem at all.”

The Remix Madness collection is now live!

Although the remixes are now visible, the Madness collection will remain open for signups and posting until creators are revealed at 8 AM Eastern time on September 25. I expect most of the Madness works to be posted sometime this week, so it’s definitely not too late to throw your name in!

Please contact me at remixrevivalmod@gmail.com if you receive a remix in the Madness collection that breaks any of the rules

Finally, have fun! :DDDDDD

Paul and I spent Sunday in Calvert County with Cheryl, first at Annmarie Garden, then at the beach! The garden was having its annual Artsfest, with more than 150 painters, sculptors, beaders, knitters, and many other artists, as well as music throughout the garden -- in fact, my most significant purchase was a pair of CDs by The Honey Dewdrops, a husband-and-wife folk singer-songwriter duo who I'd never heard (or heard of) until their music wafted through the trees and I told the others I wanted to go sit and listen to them. Plus I bought a pair of inexpensive glass earrings.

After lunch and fresh lemonade at the picnic tables, and a lot of admiring crafts, we drove to Flag Ponds Park, where we walked through the woods to the beach and spent an hour and a half wading in the Chesapeake, looking for shark's teeth, and spotting herons and egrets hiding in the tall grass (there were plenty of fish but we only saw a couple of crabs). We left when the beach closed for the evening and drove home, stopping at Attman's Deli for dinner since it was just about the only thing still open nearby. Cheryl headed home and we watched the Emmy Awards -- yay, The Handmaid's Tale!

Shiv glided into the reception room, puzzling his brows together. “Heron? This isn't a day for Doctor G to visit.”

“I'm here to talk to you, and Da's visit's still planned,” Heron assured, his Irish accent slightly thicker. “So I thought I should introduce myself properly.”

“Good idea,” Dymin nodded in agreement, opening Boss White's door for the group. Heron fell into step behind Buttons, unsurprised when Shiv drew up the rear.

“Boss White, this is Heron Finn,” Dymin introduced. “He brought a basket of different flavored honey, and said that Shiv's part can be taken from any of them.”

reminders

[personal profile] unforgotten posting in [community profile] remixrevival

Just a couple general reminders!

1. Remixes must link to the work they were based on. This is a critical part of this exchange; as your remix is based off someone else's work, they deserve to be credited. In some cases, it may also be difficult for the original creator to tell which work has been remixed without such a link. You may provide a link via your author’s notes or through the AO3 interface. To do the latter, simply check off "This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work" and insert the URL of the original.

2. Remixes are meant to be anonymous until creator reveals next Sunday. If you have explicitly included information about your identity, such as a link to your tumblr, please remove it from your remix until after creator reveals. Additionally, please do not link to your remix from your tumblr/dreamwidth/etc, or add it to a pre-existing AO3 series that also contains unanon works until after creator reveals.

We're live!

The Remix Revival 2017 collection is open for viewing! Meanwhile, the Madness collection will open roughly 24 hours from now, at 8 AM Eastern time Monday morning.

Please contact me ASAP at remixrevivalmod@gmail.com if any of the following applies to you:

  • You fulfilled your assignment on time, but did not receive a remix in the main collection. (Please check your AO3 gifts page first in case an email went missing somewhere.)
  • You received a remix under 1000 words (for fic).
  • You received a remix that is clearly incomplete.
  • You received a remix of an unavailable work (WIP, collaboration, or previous remix).
  • You received a remix of one of your safe works.
  • You received a remix that changed the pairing (or added a pairing to a gen work where that pairing was never explicitly mentioned).
  • You received a remix that seems to have nothing to do with your original work even if you squint really hard while holding it upside-down.

Some of you have multiple remixes in the main collection. There are a few possible reasons for this: you were double assigned; your remixer remixed more than one of your works; or you went to pinch hit and your original remixer came through after the deadline. In any of these cases, please enjoy your good fortune!

Finally, a reminder: it is perfectly acceptable to post-date your remixes so that they have today’s date and show up toward the top of their respective fandom tags. If your remix is in a fandom that’s had any movement since you posted it, I would strongly recommend doing so. My only request, if you do post-date, is that you limit it to once during the anon period and/or once after creator reveals (so no more than twice total).

And I think that’s it for now. Enjoy the collection, everyone! :D

Heron straightened his tie, then checked over the basket wadded with bold purple tissue paper in between the oval jars each bedecked with one of four colors of ribbon. The doorbell rang, making him sigh. “One second, Graceful.” Heron called as he gathered up the basket before greeting the teleporter and locking the front door of the now-empty house behind himself.

A moment later, the young woman chuckled. “You can open your eyes now,” she offered, not quite teasing. “Is that the same kind of honey you promised me?” Graceful asked.

George Washington )

On Saturday we picked up Annmarie and went to lunch at Layla's Lebanese Restaurant in Woodbridge, then drove to Mount Vernon for the Colonial Fair. We met Alice, Jeremy, and Avery there and looked at pottery, ate bread and cheese, visited the farm animals, thought about buying glass but they didn't take credit cards, got fans in the gift shop, learned how to weave linen, got sodas because it was warm, met George Washington, saw the area behind the mansion that slid down to the Potomac River during storms earlier in the summer, and hung out with the rat catcher and his rats:

Avery and I won an Arcanine raid before he went home with his parents and we took Annmarie back to Woodbridge, stopping at Baskin Robbins for ice cream and drinks before going to her house. Then we drove home, went to Giant to get toilet paper and other necessities, and came home to the cats, with whom we watched some college football and Skyped Maddy who is coming back to Maryland next week. Now we're watching the rerun of the Tom Hanks pre-election Saturday Night Live and I can't figure out whether to laugh or to never stop screaming.

Poem for Saturday and Mewtwo Capture

Three exciting things happened on Friday. The first was going out to breakfast with Alice at Bagel City and stopping in AC Moore, where we found Halloween decorations including glass pumpkins and Day of the Dead artwork. The second, which I found out after I got back, is that Adam was offered the internship for which he flew to Seattle to interview less than a week ago. The third was that I got to take my pass to the gym at the Sprint store in Montgomery Mall, where, along with over 50 people, many of whom I know from an online group, I got to participate in a Mewtwo raid, which my Mystic team won...and I caught Mewtwo!

The rest of my day was not as eventful, and I didn't even get the laundry folded, though I did fix a piece of jewelry that needed a charm reattached. I didn't get to hear Cassini's final flight till after the fact, though I guess due to the speed of transmission, neither did the scientists at JPL. We had dinner with my parents and saw the beginning of the Nationals game, but Things Did Not Go Well At All, and since the same could be said of the Orioles game and there was no college football on we really wanted to see, we gave up on sports for the evening and watched two Bones episodes instead. Happy Saturday!

Intimate verses

Look! No one saw the amazing
Burial of your one final dream.
Only the ungrateful and mean
Gave you a shoulder for weeping!
Get used to the cesspit that awaits!
Man, in this miserable land,
Surrounded by wild beasts, can only stand
By dishing out even stronger bites.
Take a match – light your cigarette!
The kiss, the friend, precedes the spit,
The hand caresses – before the stick.
If someone saves you from hell,
Stone the hand that treats you well,
Spit on those who try to kiss you!

:: Part of the Polychrome Heroics universe, set in North Carolina, this is a “Finn Family” tale, but with Simon and Tolliver, told from Simon's perspective. A heavy storm in mid-August causes unexpected problems. ::

Someone draped the tumbling blocks quilt around his shoulders. Simon glanced up, leaning toward Tolliver, who rubbed his fingers over the line of stubble on the other man's jaw. “I love it when you bring up our attack lawyer, even as an empty threat.”

“Read that,” Simon muttered. “It's not an empty threat this time.”

His phone rang, starting off the next round of confrontations with their insurance company. Simon held his temper, barely, but his control seemed to slip as the level of coffee in his mug dropped closer and closer to empty. Sharp electronic beeps broke through the latest non-apology from the supervisor, and a woman's voice broke through. “Excuse me, Mrs. Ortiz, I'll handle the call from here. This is Elena Muir, Mister Finn.”

“it's not Finn yet,” Simon offered as a weak, reluctant laugh slipped free.

This Computer Is Younger Than Previously Thought

I found out what my computer model is. Until now, all I knew (since what was once written was lost to the mists of time, as the sticker wore off at some point) was it was just HP Compaq, since we hadn’t found the old paperwork for it as of yet. So I’m posting this mainly for my own sake, should I lose track of where I made a note of that.

HP Compaq dx2450 Microtower. I went to the support page for HP, and found the method for determining the type a particular model is.

So how did I find out? First, hit the plus sign around the Option 2 section. Their way didn’t work for me, and we never had HP Support Assistant in this computer, for whatever reason even back when it was still XP and would have had those original files. However, figure 1 mentions System Information. Typed in that, and the window that came up had everything, including a section for System Model. And there we have it.

Judging by this press release, it came out around April of 2008, if not earlier. Granted, my model was 32 bit, not the 64 bit they’re announcing. If that’s accurate, that means that the date I previously estimated is off by a few years. Should it make it another few months to 2018 prior to it being replaced, this one’s still going to have made it at least a decade. And should it still survive, we'll have it around as a spare, should its replacement have issues, or should Dad's laptop have problems down the line.

Benediction on making the culinary combination

For food dipped
    in honey, say
        "your love leaves

my fingers fragrant."
    Don't rush to wash.
        Let sweetness linger.

For savory dishes
    with stone fruits
        say "may the year

balance my sweet
    with your salt."
        Let your mouth water.

For nubbled citrus
    steeped in vodka,
        recite the verse

"as a deer thirsts."
    Close your eyes.
        Savor every drop.

I ran across a machzor (high holiday prayerbook) from 1931 recently. The first thing in the table of contents is "Benediction on making the culinary combination." The thing itself is pretty prosaic -- it's just a prayer for the practice of eruv tavshilin. (Click on the link to learn more about that.) But it sparked my poetic imagination.

[A]s a deer thirsts. See Psalm 42, verse 2

[N]ubbled citrus / steeped in vodka. See Etrogcello.
